April is a special month to me because my daughter was born on the 11th and it’s also the month for Earth Day. I personally think everyday should be Earth Day but it’s nice to bring it front and center once a year to remind us all that we need to be more earth conscious. About a year and a half ago I wrote a post about this amazing urban garden called Garden Station in downtown of the city I grew up in. (Dayton population 141,527. It is the 4th largest city in Ohio, 63rd largest in the United States). I grew up walking downtown on the weekends to see a movie at the Victory or Lowes theater or go shopping with my allowance at McCrory’s the five and dime store (they sold hamsters in the basement, I loved that store). I remember the walk down north Main street, crossing the bridge over the river right before you get into town. I was scared on that bridge! You could see through the sides down into the river as you walked across. I remember telling myself,  ” don’t look down, walk fast”. Even now though I live in a different city I still enjoy going into downtown Dayton. But instead of visiting the five and dime I go to the farmer’s markets now and I have to drive across the bridge to get into downtown, not so scary now. 🙂

This year I am so excited to be involved in the Earth Fest at Garden Station in downtown Dayton. The fun starts on Saturday April 18 at 10:00 AM and lasts until 7:00 PM. Garden Station is located at 509 E. 4th St. 45402. There’ll be local bands, local foods, craft beers, heirloom plant sale, raffles, several guest speakers and The Really Really Free Market. They also have over 30 free workshops on gardening, bee keeping, backyard chickens, home-brewing, kids activities, and lots more.

I am teaching an hour children’s class on how to make seedling pots of out old newspapers. My grand daughter and I will be teaching the class together. Each child will get to take home their little seedling after we are finished. That is only one of many free classes they are offering this Saturday at the Earth Fest.
