December is fast approaching and I need to do a safety checklist for winter driving. I don’t want to be caught in my vehicle broken down, freezing cold, and not prepared. It seems the older I get the more prepared I am for what could happen. Thank goodness.
Safety Checklist for Winter Driving
- Replace wiper blades – Check to make sure the blades clear the glass without leaving streaks or marks. You don’t realize how important good wiper blades are until you’re in the middle of a snowstorm and you can’t see out the windshield.
- Fill washer fluid – Make sure the window washer fluid is filled, with all the salt on the roads windshields get pretty mucked up in a short amount of time when you’re on the road.
- Check coolant levels – Check the coolant level when the engine is cold. If the coolant is low add a ratio of 50/50 of coolant and water.
- Check tire pressure and tire tread – When the temperatures start getting cold it reduces the air pressure in your tires. For every 10 degrees, you lose 1 pound of air pressure. In the winter check them frequently.
Battery check, cables, and terminals - Check hoses and belts – Look at the coolant system and check for any cracks and leaks. Squeeze the hoses to check for brittleness. Tighten all loose clamps.
- Check lights – Check brake lights, head lights, and emergency lights. Replace bulbs as needed.
- Check brakes – Have your brakes checked by a certified mechanic to make sure they are working properly.

Jumper cables
Flares or triangle reflectors.
A quart or more of motor oil
A gallon of coolant
First-aid kit
Blanket or space blanket
Flashlight and extra batteries
Tire pressure gauge
Basic Toolkit
Paper towels
Spray with washer fluid
Ice scraper
Granola or energy bars
