Welcome to Backyard Gardening. Let me first start by say I’m not an expert at gardening. I’m someone who has been gardening in some way all my life from as early as I can remember.

My dad taught me to outdoor garden. He always had a nice size garden on our tiny city lot. He made use of any space he could.( I tend to do that now, drives my husband crazy with my plant clutter). I like a more casual look in my gardening. I don’t mind a little over grown plants.  My dad taught me old fashioned gardening practices. He always composted. Not in a fancy bin. He would toss all the waste in a corner of the yard. Each summer he would bring home a big batch a manure from a local farm. Everyone in the neighborhood was wondering what that smell was. I remember working in the garden with my Dad as early as 6 or 7 years old. I was his gardening buddy 🙂

As an early teen one of my favorite hang outs was a plant shop north of town. It was not like a regular florist but a real kind of funky plant shop. It was in an old building in the now Santa Clara neighborhood.  My girlfriend Donna and I would hang out there and learn about different plants. We especially loved making terrariums.  At home I had  plant filled windows. I learned at a very young age the value of plants and gardening.

I plan on sharing with you the progress of my backyard garden. I want to show you how easy it is to have fresh herbs and vegetables even if you only have a small patio.

I am very lucky to have my brother and a friend supply me with home grown seedlings. Pictured are a couple of cucumber seedlings. You can direct sow cucumber seeds, but it’s nice to have them already sprouted 🙂

Below I planted Spinach. Emma likes to watch all the progress. I purchased most of my seeds at Mary’s Heirloom Seeds. I am so pleased. The quality and detailed service given is fabulous. They go above and beyond. The prices are very reasonable too.

I have many assorted of pots I buy at yard sales. I will fill them with all sorts of herbs and flowers. Today I planted sage, basil, dill, carrots, and radishes. I will plant the tomato and pepper plants this afternoon if the weather warms up a bit.

As you can see below I have a little problem, actually a couple We have a bunny family living some where close by. The back yard is fenced so that helps keep them out. As you can see they do find they way in. They look cute now. But when they are eating my lettuce I won’t think they are so cute.
