We usually have the family over to our house on the holidays. I like to look to the outdoors for things to decorate the table. Pine cones, flowers, twigs, things like that. This year I came across a post on growing Easter grass from regular grass seed. So I thought I could try to do that with my wheat berries. I know you can easily sprout wheat berries.

I planted the wheat  berries and hope they will be up by Easter Sunday.

What I did:

1 cup wheat berries

Add water to cover. wait one hour. Drain.

Choose a container to use as a planter. I used a seed starting container. It has a nice clear lid to help them sprout quicker. It will be a nice size for the dinner table.

Fill with 1 1/2 to 2 inches of good potting soil.

Spread drained wheat berries over soil, trying not to stack them on top of each other. It’s ok if they touch side to side.

Cover with 1/2 inch of soil.

Water until damp. Cover with plastic or a lid to create a green house effect.

Keep in the sunlight as much as possible. I have it on my sun porch.

You can see it’s steaming up inside. I will post a picture when they first sprout. I have 8 days until Easter Sunday! Wish me luck!

Update 4/5/12 – It’s growing a little uneven. I still have 2 1/2 days before Easter. I think it will work out pretty neat once I decorate it. Guess I may have to give it a cut. LOL! Will post a final picture. 🙂
