I have just finished simmering the bean soup.
It smells so good in the house today. It’s chilly outside and a perfect day for soup. Here is my recipe for bean and ham soup. Here are the directions for soaking your beans. Do you have any variations to bean soup that you do?

Ingredients

  • 1 ham bone/ham leftover
  • 2 lb northern beans soaked / Jar
  • 2 each carrot sliced
  • 3 each stalks celery sliced
  • 1/2 small onion diced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Start with a ham bone.
  2. Clean most of the ham off the bone, leave some.
  3. Place ham bone in a large pot.
  4. Add soaked and rinsed beans to the pot.
  5. Add carrots, celery, and onion.
  6. Add water to cover.
  7. Add bay leaf.
  8. Bring to a boil.
  9. Cover and simmer for 6 – 8 hours.
  10. Carefully remove the ham bone. Let cool a bit then remove all the meat.
  11. Return the ham to the soup pot and remove the bay leaf. Add any leftover ham now. Simmer for a couple more minutes. Salt and Pepper to your taste.

Recipe Notes

You can use either soaked beans or precooked jar beans. You can cook this in the slow cooker on low for 6 to 8 hours.
